Participating in Economic Experiments

This facility is run by CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems and the University of Canberra with the support of the Securities Industry Research Centre of Asia-Pacific (SIRCA).

Economic experiments investigate how people make economic decisions. They are used to help design economic policies, through a better understanding of how people respond to different policies and incentives.

University of Canberra students are invited to register to participate in these experiments. By taking part in an experiment you will have the opportunity to earn money. The amount you earn will depend on the outcomes of decisions made during the experiment. You will be paid a minimum of $10, up to a maximum of $50 (rounded to the nearest dollar).

To register, please follow the link form the front page. You will need to enter your email address and student number. Once you have registered, you are eligible to take part in experiments. The calendar indicates when experiments are scheduled, and whether they still have places open. You can then sign up for individual experiments through the calendar.

Once you have registered, you will receive emails inviting you to participate in future experiments, as well as reminders to attend experiments for which you have signed on. You can de-register at any time by emailing the administrator.

The calendar indicates how long experiments will run for – we promise they will not exceed the scheduled time.

Should you wish to, you are of course free to leave at any time during an experiment. However if you choose to leave before the end of an experiment you will not be paid (as leaving prematurely may invalidate the results of the entire session).

During a typical experiment you will be presented with a scenario, and asked to make various decisions relating to that scenario. You will be provided with a full set of instructions explaining the scenario and the decisions you are required to make. You will not need any prior knowledge.

The decisions you make during the experiment will be recorded and used to compare the effects of alternative policies. All decisions you make will be completely confidential. Your name will not be stored with the data from the experiment. Results will not be published or reported in any way which may identify the individuals involved.

You will receive your payment at the end of the experiment. You will be asked to sign a receipt for the money we pay you – this is for accounting purposes only. The amount of money you earn in the experiment will be confidential.

This research is conducted in accordance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Research Involving Humans, and has been approved by the University of Canberra Ethics sub-committee.
